The Nick Of Time (and other abrasions): A Heart Full Of Dust Part One

A Heart Full Of Dust
by
Al Bruno III

(One)

The storm came suddenly, birthed in a hot wind that blew in swirls and eddies. It engulfed the Barrens in a cloud of dust. The storm howled like a living thing and battered the spindly cyclopean structures that were the wasteland's only landmarks.

Vagabond staggered through the tempest- blinded and disoriented. In three steps he was on his knees. The dust had its way with him, getting into his ears, his clothes and his hair. When he screamed it filled his mouth.

Two figures approached out of the chaos, their features hidden beneath heavy robes, goggles and protective masks. Even with the coverings it was obvious that one of the figures' heads was oddly misshapen. Vagabond blinked his watering eyes and tried to speak but his voice was dry and choked.

One of the figures replied by raising a staff and striking Vagabond hard across the side of his head.
